!BIRTH: On January 30, 1626, Don Pedro declared in Santa Fe that he was seventy years old. (P. 7) A different account contradicts by saying Don Pedro testified that he was sixty years old. Entered New Mexico as part of a second consignment of colonists and soldiers in 1600. First mentioned in 1602.
Listed in Onate's recruitment list of 1600 as Sargento Pedro Gomez Duran. Described as a well-built man of good features, fifty years old, the legitimate son of Hernan Sanchez Rico, and born in Valverde in the jurisdiction of the Grand Master of Santiago. Valverde de Llerena is a village some ten miles east of the city of Llerena in Extremadura, Spain. Chavez, P.3.
Don Pedro, like other conquistadores, bore his maternal surname of Duran y Chaves. He named his first born son after his own father, Fernando Gomez and the second one after himself. (P. 18)
